Once again we’ve created a stunning, three dimensional, high relief medal featuring one of the Monuments on our race course. Last year we featured theĀ War Memorial, which sits in mile 26 of the course. This year we’re featuring theĀ Veterans Memorial Plaza Obelisk, which sits one block to the north. Built in 1923, the Obelisk is a 100-foot shaft of black Berwick granite, representing the hopes and aspirations of the nation. The bronze tablets at its base represent the four fundamentals upon which our nation’s hopes are founded: law, science, religion and education. Both are part of the War Memorial Plaza, which was designated as a National Historic Landmark District in 1994.
More on the 4-Year-Medal Series:
Launched in 2014, the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon Medal series will fit together to form the flag of Indianapolis. Set to culminate with our tenth anniversary in 2017, Monumental runners who have finished the series will receive the red and white Star Medallion, signifying the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, while ten year finishers will in addition receive a commemorative “frame” that holds the series together. Four-year series finishers may also purchase the frame to display their medals as a set.
Don’t miss yours! Sellout’s quickly approaching in the full and half marathon! Secure your spot before they’re gone.
