FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEARLY 3,000 PARTICIPANTS TAKE ON FORT BEN & HISTORIC LAWRENCE

Lawrence, Indiana and the Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park saw thousands of runners, walkers, and spectators this Saturday for the 2023 Indy Half Marathon at Fort Ben. The 28th annual event featured Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, & Kids One Mile distances.

The race welcomed nearly 3,000 participants back to historic Fort Ben, where the courses take off through the state park and around the surrounding Lawrence area. Additionally, almost 600 Lawrence Township students lined up for the 5K as part of the Apex Benefits Monumental Kids Movement (MKM) program. These students received a free entry as part of their bi-weekly running club at their individual schools. Since 2012, the Apex Benefits MKM has expanded to 60+ schools and 10,000+ graduates.

Zane Aldrich led the chase for the 2023 Half Marathon men’s title, followed by Caleb Kerr in second place, and Damon Pruett and Curtis Eckstein crossing at nearly the same time for third and fourth, respectively. The 2023 Half Marathon women’s title was taken home by Sarah Higgens in 1:17:53, just 9 seconds off the standing course record. Lucy Dobbs finished second, followed by Katie Ruhlman in third place.

Both of our 10K winners, Daniel Watts and Krystal Thompson, ran home with their respective titles by over a minute. The 5K also saw some quick times; Caiden Daniel won the men’s title in 17:13 and Cara Karmolinski took the women’s title in 19:13.

Post-Race celebrations included a beer garden featuring beverages from Sun King, Circle Beverage, Tinker Coffee, and Athletic Brewing; as well as free pizza from Jockamo Upper Crust Pizza. Participants also had the opportunity for free injury assessments and post-race stretching provided by Athletico.
